Small business blogging isn’t easy. Especially if you’re a small indie brand trying to wear every hat at once.

So, generous individual that I am, I’ve pulled together four essential small business blog topics to help you fill out your content calendar. These four ‘content pillars’ make up the DNA of a well-rounded content plan and will give you ever-green idea generation from now until the end of time.

You’re most welcome! Let’s get into it.

1) Seasonality

Starting nice and easy with the most obvious content idea generation angle — the season. Are there any relevant events coming up that feed into your brand, product, or USP in any way? Do your customers use your products or services differently in this season? Is there a specific benefit for them if they buy in this season?

For example, if you’re planning your Q4 winter content plan and you manufacture bath oils, it might be beneficial to talk about the damaging effects of winter weather on the skin and how something like your bath oils could be used to remedy it.

2) Inspirational

Inspirational blog posts exist to get people excited about your products. An inspirational post adds context and shows the reader how this product or service fits into their life or — better yet — brings them closer to the life they’d like to have.

If you’re a clothing brand, you can use inspirational posts to create style guides, shoing people how to wear and style your garments for different occassions. If there’s a style icon that suits your brand, do a style breakdown post and show people how to emulate that look. These posts are great fun and, if you get ‘em right, are super sharable.

3) Answer customer queries or FAQs

Hello, easy content! Reach out to your customer service team or scour the customer emails you get through your business email address. Are there any common queries about the product or product usage that you can turn into a blog or social post? I bet there bloody are.

FAQ posts aren’t just fab for helping customers navigate your offering — they also give your CS staff somewhere to send customers for more detailed information and help to catch anyone searching Google for the same information. It’s great service, great SEO, and great content, all in one.

4) Expand on your USP

I’m guessing you created your products or services to answer a customer need or because you found a 'better' way of doing things? Why not turn this into a topical post that frames the problem your product answers and then delivers the solution?

Delve into the nitty gritty of the problem, exploring real stories from real people, real statistics from reputable sources, and then show how you’re helping. This’ll help people catch your vibe, hook into your cause, align themselves with you, and ensures you’re known for the very thing that makes you different.
