Witchology Magazine
who is she?!
Witchology Magazine was an award-winning quarterly lifestyle magazine by witches, for witches.
How it started
It’s December 2022, and I’ve just wrapped up working for the year when an urgent email hits my inbox. It’s from Witchology Magazine’s editor-in-chief, Louisa Dean, and she’s in a tight spot. One of her journalists secured an interview with Wardruna’s Lindy-Fay Hella, but due to personal reasons, she can’t do the write-up.
They needed a witchcraft-savvy music journalist to help them hit their deadline ASAP. And honey…it could only have been me.
how it went
I took possession of the interview recording and pulled a few late nights over my Christmas break to turn in a mighty fine feature article from a session I neither attended nor planned. It went so well that Louisa and her creative director, Christie, invited me to be a regular contributor at Witchology.
After a year of writing for them, Witchology invited me to join the editorial team as music editor. I managed to score 6 cover features out of 8 issues working with the magazine (and it remains one of my proudest achievements to date).
Musicians interviewed with them include:
Heilung
Chelsea Wolfe
Twin Temple
Green Lung
Jonathan Hultén
…and more besides.
I also curated Spotify playlists for issues and contributed other articles where needed.
Witchology decided to take a hiatus in 2025, so I took matters into my own hands and filled the music-interview-shaped hole in my heart by launching my own occult music and arts publication, earwyrm zine.
how we got there
Until my time at Witchology, I’d been a freelance journalist for Metal Hammer and Classic Rock, making pitches and taking assignments. Being a smaller publication, Witchology needed me to step up and support the team.
I’d create artist shortlists aligned with issue themes, pitch them to the rest of the team for approval, and then cold-pitch management teams/bands/record labels directly with the offering. During my time with them, I never had a pitch rejected (although I was once ghosted after an initial reply! But I won’t name names.).
I would arrange and conduct the interviews, write up the features, get my mitts on press images, and proofread the pieces once they were in the layout. I also helped determine the magazine's marketing strategy, which was very cool indeed.
And ya know what, reader? I did all of this around retainer clients and ad-hoc projects. 😎
