Freelance Focus: waiting with The Hanged Man

This is a very artfully taken photo of the hanged man tarot card. It depicts a man hanging upside down from a tree branch.

Come to hang? You’re in the right place! August’s tarot card prompt is The Hanged Man — a chap who loves nothing more than an introspective tea break. But before we delve into the August focus, let’s recap this month’s card!

Last month’s card: The King of Coins

Over the last four weeks, we’ve been focusing on wealth, abundance, leadership and business. The King of Coins was a good omen for those of us toying with new business ventures and ideas — did you put anything into motion?

The King of Coins is a generous chap, so July was a great time to donate funds to a worthy cause, throw your weight behind an important issue, or refer work to someone in your network. How did you get on?

How it went for me…

This card meant something very different for me! July wasn’t a time to kickstart new ventures or hustle — it was a time to pull back from work and give my time and energy to people in my personal life.

After my experiences these past few months, I can honestly say that time is the most precious thing. So I’ve been giving it generously where I can.

August’s card: The Hanged Man

Okay, I’ll admit this card looks bad. I mean — when you think of a ‘hanged man’, you think of a public execution. But this guy is different. He’s hanging around to kill time! See how he reads his book and catches butterflies from his upside-down chill zone?

Taking our cue from The Hanged Man, we should focus on making August our hiatus month. That might mean taking advantage of an afternoon off, booking some holiday, or pausing new work/clients while you take a minute to debrief on something else.

The Hanged Man isn’t a layabout. He uses his downtime to be introspective, examine his bad habits, and create space to let them go. Sometimes, we need some separation to really understand where we are.

Freelance life is often a treadmill of business development, projects, sign-offs, and repeat. It’s hard to stop and look at what you’re doing and where you are. Take a leaf out of this chap’s upside-down book — stop, take a breath, and look around!
